These snakes are very beautiful and typically have a great temperament. The first time I encountered a red bellied black snake was as a child and my fascination continued until this day.

DESCRIPTION

The red bellied black snake has a unique appearance. It has an immaculately shiny (glossy) black back and head with a deep read or cream red belly (underside) with a more prominent red on the flanks. Typically they grow up to 2 metres long. A recent one was caught in Queensland that was reportedly twice the size of an average adult and weighed over 10kgs. Generally though, they rarely reach this size

VENOM

Red bellied black snakes are a dangerously venomous species. Their bites contain strong hemotoxic and cytotoxic venom which have anticoagulant and myotoxic effects.

Symptoms of a bite include:

NauseaVomitingHeadacheAbdominal PainDiarrhoeaSweatingLocal/general muscle pain and weaknessRed/brown urine.Death (in some cases)

FOOD & REPRODUCTION

Red bellied black snakes love to feed on frogs, reptiles (including other snakes), fish and will also eat small mammals. They search far and wide for food on land and in water and can climb over fences and houses to try to find food.

These snakes typically mate in spring and mid-summer and females give birth to up to around 19 live snakes.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

These snakes are found all the way from north east Queensland through New South Wales to Victoria and south eastern parts of South Australia. They are typically found in areas with good water supplies such as rivers, creek banks, swamps, rain forests and dams. I typically find this snake on the eastern and northern suburbs outside of Melbourne. However I have caught one in the middle of Whittlesea shopping strip and another red bellied black in a car dashboard in Mernda.

BEHAVIOUR

This species is active by day. They are typically a very shy snake and will often freeze to avoid detection. When approached, the red bellied black snake will almost always try to flee at first instead towards the nearest hiding spot. When unable to escape, these snakes usually spread their neck, hiss, make mock strikes with a closed mouth “head butting” the target.

If severely provoked, injured or made to fear for its life, red bellied black snakes can deliver a very fast bite whereby they hang on and continue to chew the victim.

CONCLUSION

Red-Bellied Black Snakes are still very venomous snakes and should not be handled. The one you should commonly find in Melbourne and surrounding areas is the Lowland Copperhead snake. This snake is not typically known compared to other snakes such as the tiger or eastern brown, however in my experience appears just as often in people’s homes and backyards. The lowland copperhead is NOT closely related to the American copperhead which is an entirely different species of snake. DESCRIPTION The lowland copperhead snake highly variable in colour ranging from light grey, reddish, brown and black. Adult copperheads can be black coloured often have a prominent orange/red streak running along the side of the body which causes many to mistake them for red bellied black snakes. The copperhead snake is usually 1-1.5 metres long. Females tend to be up to 1 metre long and male lowland copperheads generally grow up to 1.5 metres long.

VENOM Lowland copperhead snakes can be very dangerous and their bites can kill. The venom of the lowland copperhead snake contains pre and postsynaptic neurotoxins which affect the nervous system. FOOD & REPRODUCTION Lowland copperhead snakes feed on small vertebrates such as frogs, lizards, and occasionally small mammals. They will eat smaller snakes and are cannibalistic. If I were to put two lowland copperhead snakes together for mating purposes, I need to be careful the larger snake does not try to eat the smaller one. BEHAVIOUR Lowland copperhead snakes are typically docile and very shy with humans. Generally these snakes will retire and retreat if disturbed, however if threatened can assume menacing positions puffing up their body to appear bigger. When scared lowland copperhead snakes often repeatedly change position with great speed ready to strike out. Lowland copperhead snakes are very fast snakes when they bite. However, they are not usually aggressive and bites are uncommon. Female lowland copperhead snakes can give birth to up to 30 live young in mid to late summer.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT Lowland copperhead snakes are found near damp habitats such as streams or swampy areas. The lowland copperhead is found all over southern Victoria and has a preference for places near water including around ponds, dams, canals, drainage ditches and along the sides of roads. Lowland copperhead snakes have adapted to living in cold temperature climates. Lowland copperhead snakes can be active in weather considered to be too cold for other snakes. In and around Melbourne, I mostly come across Lowland Copperhead Snakes in Eltham, Kinglake and Research particularly if there is a swimming pool or pond in the person’s back yard.

EASTERN BROWN SNAKE - 2ND MOST VENOMOUS SNAKE IN THE WORLD

Eastern Brown snakes are the 2nd most venomous land snake on the planet. Brandon is typically flighty like most eastern brown snakes.

WARNING: Never copy the actions here in this video. Eastern brown snakes are extremely dangerous. If you go near a snake, immediately move away. If bitten by an eastern brown snake, immediately seek medical advice URGENTLY.

The eastern brown snake or 'common brown' is the 2nd most venomous land snake in the world. Together with other brown snakes, they are responsible for more deaths every year in Australia than any other group of snakes. This species of snake has extremely toxic venom that contains POWERFUL neurotoxins and blood coagulants.

A bite can cause a person to suffer diarrhea, dizziness, renal failure, convulsions, paralysis and cardiac arrest. The bite mark however might not appear until around up to 30 minutes after striking. That said the fangs of an eastern brown are not as long as other deadly snakes of Australia. Bites through clothes are not common however it can easily penetrate human skin if unprotected by clothes. Eastern brown snakes love to eat small mammals such as mice, rats, as well as birds and other small reptiles are also on the menu.

In the spring time, you can see males in a combat dance fighting over dominance. The winner will mate with the female who can produce up to 30 eggs in late spring or early summer. This snake (depending on which scientific journal you read) is ranked the 5th most venomous snake on land in the entire world. They are extremely common in Victorian back yards so it would be good to learn a bit more about them. No two eastern tiger snakes look exactly alike. There are significant variations of colour from brown, black, grey, yellow with alternating shades of dark and light bands across the snake. Bandings however are not always visible.

Across Melbourne, I have found more yellowish bellies occur in snakes from Kinglake and snakes appear to be more grey and brown colour from East Melbourne suburban areas however this is only an observation. Tiger snakes can have shorter and broader heads compared to brown snakes and are typically found at 1 – 1.5 metres long in Melbourne however I have caught tiger snakes easily over 2 metres long.Eastern tiger snakes are in the top 5 most deadly snakes of the world. They are very active during the day however can be found hunting and night time. When threatened, the tiger snake will flatten its neck and raise its head similar to a cobra. This is a defensive posture but the tiger snake will bite if harmed, touched or you feel threatened.

When looking for a tiger snake, don’t always look at the ground. Tiger snakes habitually raid bird nests and can be found climbing tree branches at incredible heights. It is not uncommon for me to find a tiger snake on a house roof or hanging from a fence.

Eastern tiger snake venom is extremely dangerous. It contains POWERFUL:

1. Neurotoxins (Affect the brain and nervous system)

2. Blood coagulants (Affect blood clotting)

3. Haemolysins (Destroy the cell membrane of red blood cells)

4. Myotoxins (Cause severe muscle necrosis and paralysis including (diaphragmatic paralysis)

These different toxins act simultaneously on the body and symptoms of a tiger snake bite include:

1. Foot and neck localised pain.

2. Tingling

3. Numbness

4. Sweating

5. Rapid onset of breathing difficulties

6. This leads to paralysis

7. Death.

Eastern tiger snakes love to eat frogs. I have even caught one that died trying to eat a frog that was much too big for its mouth. If frogs are unavailable, tiger snakes will happily consume small lizards, birds and mammals such as rodents. Female Tiger Snakes are viviparous. They do not lay eggs but instead give birth to live young of around 30 baby tiger snakes. tiger snakes in every suburb of Melbourne I have caught snakes.

They are widespread in Victoria however appear to be absent from the semi arid areas of the north-west part of the state. Tiger snakes are common around swamps, wetlands, water courses, ponds, rivers and damns. Where food is plentiful, it is not uncommon to see large numbers of eastern tiger snakes in a small area. For some reason, I seem to find eastern tiger snakes in people’s homes more than any other type of snake. This is especially noticeable in Diamond Creek.

SNAKE CATCHER MELBOURNE

Snake on your property? This is for illustration purposes only.

I must state from the beginning that as The Snake Hunter, I do NOT proactively advocate the use of electronic “shock” collars (E-Collars) as the PRIMARY form of educating dogs to avoid snakes.

However, as I research more about protecting man's best friend, I recognise that e-collars may have a place in cases where all other attempts to teach a dog to avoid snakes have been attempted unsuccessfully. Keep in mind, as The Snake Hunter, I am against ALL forms of animal cruelty.

However, when considering the dangers, risks, costs and significant pain/death associated with a snake bite, e-collars have been historically used by qualified trainers to teach dogs to stay away from snakes. It is important to understand there may be a place for e-collars when all other attempts have failed.

I am not here to say that e-collars are “wrong” or “right”. Instead, this page is about helping owners better understand some of the important questions relating to e-collars to determine their effectiveness, appropriate use and relevant laws pertaining to their use so you can make a more informed decision.

Are E-Collars legal?

Yes they are legal in the state of Victoria at the time of writing this document. In accordance with section 17 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2008 people can use electronic collars on animals in Victoria. These collars can only be used on dogs or cats but not any other species of animal. Further, only government authorised e-collars can be used.

What is an E-Collar?

In accordance with Regulation 5 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2008, an electronic collar is defined as any animal collar capable of implementing/imparting an electric shock to an animal. There are two main categories of e-collars. These are:

“Containment system collars”

These are collars that are worn by animals as part of a containment system which controls an animal to a specific area through use of a boundary wire and transmitter. This type of collar is not discussed any further.

“Remote Training Collars” (Including anti-bark collars).

These collars can only be used on dogs for the purpose of “anti bark” or remote training.

What is Required To Use An E-Collar?

Regulation 18 of the above regulations specify the requirements for the use of electronic collars. An exact copy of these regulations is below:

A person must not use an authorised electronic collar unless—

(a) a veterinary practitioner has examined the physical health and temperament of the dog or cat and reasonably believes that the dog or cat is suitable to have an authorised electronic collar used on it; and

(b) the dog or cat is over 6 months of age; and

(c) a collar is not left on the dog or cat for more than 12 hours in any 24-hour period; and

(d) the use is in accordance with any instructions for use of the collar provided by the manufacturer; and

(e) the dog or cat is introduced to the use of the collar in accordance with a training program that complies with a code of practice made under section 7 of the Act (if any); and

(f) the collar complies with the following specifications—

(i) the power of the collar must not exceed either 15 milliamps root mean square or 100 milliamps single pulse with a maximum duration of 3 milliamps per second; and

(ii) the length of the stimulation period must be limited by an automatic safety cut-out; and

(iii) the collar must provide for variable levels of static stimulation; and

(g) the collar contacts have safe, rounded points; and

(h) the distance between the collar contact points does not exceed 60 millimetres.

As can be seen above, there are specific requirements that need to be met for the lawful use of electronic collars that include a veterinary practitioner providing an expert opinion that a dog is suitable for an authorised e-collar. Also, the dog must be introduced to the collar through a training program that complies with the code of practice.

The Code of Practice

The code of practice for training dogs to use e-collars is found at: http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/agriculture/animal-health-and-welfare/animal-welfare/animal-welfare-legislation/victorian-codes-of-practice-for-animal-welfare/code-of-practice-for-training-dogs-and-cats-to-wear-electronic-collars

This is an extensive document and for full details, you will need to refer to the above link of which a summary is below. Remember, this code sets out the MINIMUM standards for the use of e-collars.

Prior to the use of an e-collar, it is important to identify the cause of the problem. The dog owner needs to first seek professional advice from a vet, qualified dog trainer or animal behaviourist to provide recommendations prior to the commencement of an e-collar.Attempt obedience training or any triggers that prevent the learning from occurring. Translating this to helping dogs avoid snakes, it would be best to try to train your dog before attempting the use of an e-collar.Dog owners need to ensure that a veterinarian has been first consultant to the dog’s psychological health, prior to the use of a collar. Failure to do so could increase risks such as: increasing the dogs anxiety, decreasing their ability to learn, developing incorrect associations, not addressing the underlying issue, inducing a new aggressive response, causing confusion or more.E-collars must not be used in pregnant or nursing females, dogs with health issues that contradict the use of an ecollar or animals incapable of responding appropriately.

Who is a qualified dog trainer?

A qualified dog trainer as defined by Regulation 5 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2008, is someone who meets the requirements of Regulation 49(2) of the Domestic Animals Regulations 2005 or who is a member and qualified dog handler of the Victoria Police Dog Squad.

Regulation 49(2) of the Domestic Animals Regulations 2005 defines a ‘qualified dog trainer’ as someone who is a current member of an organisation approved by the Minister and who has completed a training course approved by the Minister for the purpose of dog training.

What should I know if purchasing an e-collar?

If you intend to purchase or hire an e-collar, in accordance with regulation 24(4) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2008 states that sellers/hirers of authorised e-collars provide information in writing of the legal requirements of the use of these collars in Victoria.

If a dog owner, trainer or anyone else fails to comply with these legislative requirements, they may be issued with an infringement notice or prosecution in a court of law with a maximum penalty of 10 penalty units.

Review of the need for e-collars

If you act under the supervision and written instruction of a vet or qualified dog trainer, THEY must review the use of the collar:

Within 6 months of the initial physical health and temperament assessment of the dog.At least every 12 months after the first review.

If you Suspect Animal Cruelty:

Note: Simply using an e-collar is not considered by law to be a form of animal cruelty unless failing to abide by the conditions above. However, if you have reason to believe that an individual is being unnecessarily cruel to a dog or any animal, you can immediately report them to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning: 136 186.

For a full list of reporting agencies to report animal cruelty, go to:

http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/agriculture/animal-health-and-welfare/animal-welfare/reporting-animal-cruelty

For More Information:

For more information about the laws relating to electronic collars

The Department of Agriculture’s website:

http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/pets/dogs/legal-requirements-for-dog-owners/electronic-collars

Austlii for the specific legislation pertaining to the Prevention of the Cruelty to Animals Act 2008:

http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/consol_reg/poctar2008469/

The Code of Practice for the use of e-collars:

http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/agriculture/animal-health-and-welfare/animal-welfare/animal-welfare-legislation/victorian-codes-of-practice-for-animal-welfare/code-of-practice-for-training-dogs-and-cats-to-wear-electronic-collars

Reporting agencies to report animal cruelty:

http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/agriculture/animal-health-and-welfare/animal-welfare/reporting-animal-cruelty

Conclusion:

Again I highlight that I do not endorse nor dissuade people from the use of e-collars as an attempt to protect dogs from snake bites. Above is a summary of the laws pertaining to the use of e-collars as a tool to keep dogs away from snakes. My only point is that if you do use e-collars, they should be a last resort after all other attempts have failed. If you see anyone being unnecessarily cruel to an animal, be sure to report it to the appropriate authorities.

Mark Pelley

The Snake Hunter

www.snakehunter.com.au

Snakes in Winter

SNAKES IN WINTER – WHAT DO THEY REALLY DOAs Australia’s weather is heading into the wet and cold season, Australians could drop their guard about snakes believing them to be hiding from the wintry weather. Many believe that snakes just “go away” in the colder weather. While snakes may vanish from our sight, they do not “disappear” as people commonly thought.

In the southern, colder parts of Australia such as Victoria or Tasmania, or in mountainous regions where temperatures fall significantly, snakes are certainly less active. Despite this, they can be found underground, in manmade structures, logs, hollows or other places where they can readily access shelter, sunlight or water if available. Do not be surprised on cold days, that snakes will prefer to bask in as much sunlight as possible before settling in for the night.

In Victoria, my services as a snake catcher are still needed in winter. Often snakes are found hiding in animal feed sheds or other places not frequently accessed by humans until one day a log, part of a fence or other structure is moved to unsuspectingly find a snake underneath. During winter, in warmer, parts of the country, snakes can reduce activity but spend less time in a semi dormant state and can still be active. In Northern parts of Australia, temperatures in the wet season can still be quite high and the semi dormant period for snakes is reduced significantly. As snakes are great swimmers, water does not act as a deterrent and instead, they can often be found in water ways.

HIBERNATION/BRUMATION…. A CONFUSED NATION

One of the biggest misunderstandings relates to whether snakes really “hibernate” in winter. No matter where I go or who I speak to, someone is always trying to “teach” me that snakes will hibernate so there is no need to worry in winter because they’re all “sleeping” until the warmer months arrive. To properly understand this issue, please note the following:

Snakes do NOT “hibernate” in the same way mammals do. Winter dormancy in reptiles is known as “brumation”. This is similar to hibernation but has key differences: Instead of experiencing long and sustained periods of inactivity, reptiles still need to drink water or change places should their area become too disturbed. All snakes have different periods of brumation and depending upon the location, latitude and temperatures, this can have different effects on snakes altogether. As snakes depend upon external sources for heat, they can still be found seeking spots of sunlight where available even in cold months.

Therefore it is a semi-dormancy that snakes demonstrate in the colder periods and not total hibernation. In extremely cold weather, the latency period is extended and snakes remain dormant for longer. People need to understand that just because the autumn and winter months are here, that does not mean to become complacent about snakes. Regardless of the temperature, snakes can still be around and can bite any person who is unfortunate enough to come across one. If you see a snake, do NOT attempt to handle or kill it. Simply back away and move around it. If a snake is in or around your home, be sure to call the SNAKE HUNTER on 0403875409. One snake that is very adept to the cold weather is the copperhead snake (See lowland copperhead venomous snake profile on this website).

If you have any questions or want to learn about snakes, follow Mark on Facebook @SnakeHunterAus

Mark Pelley (Snake Hunter)

Snake Removal Diamond Creek

Snake Removal Diamond Creek. To answer this question, it is important to understand snake behaviour around homes and where I have personally found them when attending emergency snake call outs.

SNAKE MOVEMENT

Snakes can remain stationary for extended periods and otherwise can be on the move for (in extreme cases up to 1.5 kilometres in a day). I have personally seen venomous snakes of Melbourne:

AROUND THE HOME, I have found snakes:

Climb mortar between bricks on vertical wallsClimb on top of roof tops, in gutters and hang from lattices.Crawl into weep holes (gaps left between bricks in external masonry walls that provide ventilation to building materials) and then crawl around internal spaces in the wall.Hide in the gaps between concrete pathways and homesSit on window sills, underneath front door mats, and climb inside the gap between the front door and the ground. In garages hiding in corners or near tools& Much more.

INSIDE THE HOME, I have found snakes:

Underneath refrigeratorsIn the back of dishwashersUnderneath master beds in the bedroomBehind desks, TV units & bookshelvesInside kitchen cupboards and the pantryHiding in children’s toys and toy boxesHanging from light fittings in the ceiling. And of course sitting on the floor waiting to be found.Much, much more.

IN THE GARDEN, I have found snakes:

Underneath scrub or hiding in longer grassHiding underneath or in between rocks.Around and swimming in swimming pools, ponds or water featuresInside kids cubby houses or outhouses. In flower beds, veggie patches, raised garden boxes.Inside garden sheds, chicken coups and outdoor bird cages.Climb trees in search of birdsClimbing fences to access a yardInside of motor vehicles, engine bodies, around wheelsMuch, much more.

HOW DO SNAKES ENTER SOMEONE’S PROPERTY?

Snakes can slither over, under and around fences into anywhere in your garden (front, side or rear). Snakes can crawl up your front driveway and temporarily make your home their own for a designated period of time.

Similarly snakes can enter your home also. At night I frequently catch snakes inside someone’s home and they can enter through:

Underneath the front or back door or through open doors.Open windows or gaps in windows especially where wire mesh has holes or cuts,Doggy doorsHoles in walls (around pipes or otherwise)Through Weep Holes where there is also holes in the internal framework.Vents, ducts, gaps, holes in flooring (especially where construction work occurs)Being carried inside laundry or shopping bags or otherwise boots or shoes that are carried inside.

WHAT IS SNAKE PROOFING?

"Snake Proofing" means to protect a home and property from a snake so that it will be impenetrable for snakes to enter or otherwise prevent them from accessing your property.

IS SNAKE PROOFING A HOME REAL?

Snake proofing is actually a myth and not possible to be achieved.

You read that line correctly: Snake proofing a home is not possible to be achieved.

THERE IS NO GUARANTEED WAY TO SNAKE PROOF A HOME.

However there remains products on the market available which exploit home owner’s fear of snakes. These products are sold with different levels of guarantees to prevent snakes from entering your home. These include:

Snake “proof” fencingSolar snake repellents.Spraying the house with chemicals from a pest controllerOther mechanical, electronic devices which “prevent” snakes.Recipes that grandma made in another country that you spray around the home to prevent snakes because they “hate the smell”Purchasing blue tongue lizards to put in the garden to “get rid of snakes”.Purchasing "special" plants that deter snakes.

As Australia’s own SNAKE HUNTER, I have caught snakes on properties on many occasion with all the above products present at the premises.

The home/business owner then will ask me why the “snake proof” products did not work or otherwise point them out to me. On one occasion, the home owner advised they called the manufacturer of the snake repellent to ask why a snake still entered their premises. The manufacturer reportedly responded on the phone: “You obviously need to purchase more”.

I have been advised that Consumer Affairs and the ACCC have been advised about concerns of misleading and deceptive advertising of “snake proof” products.

Despite this, after removing a snake from a home, I often find owners reluctant to get rid of these “snake repellents” even though it is evident they do not work. I have also attended child care centres, schools and businesses that were showing me the “snake proof” fencing they spent thousands on to protect their guests/children. The business/school head was pointing out the fencing while I was capturing a snake on site – again proving such products do not work.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM SNAKES

As Melbourne’s own SNAKE HUNTER, I am a licensed Snake Catcher and perform Snake Control and Snake Removal. In order to be best protected around snakes, it is important to have an awareness about these animals:

While there is a lot of fear and hype, snakes do NOT go out of their way to harm people. In fact the opposite is true, snakes try to avoid people as they are incredibly shy creatures.

As stated there is nothing you can do to 100% guarantee snake proof your home or back yard. Australia is home to snakes just as much as it is to our people.

Frequently snakes are traveling through your yards or properties in search of food, shelter, water or protection from the elements. For more information about the snakes you are likely to come across in Melbourne, click HERE.

Simple common sense steps include (but are not exclusive to):

Keep all yards tidy and clear from loose ground cover: sheets of metal, hard rubbish etc.Remove overgrown weeds and creeping vegetation.Snakes love rock retaining walls especially where there are holes or access to water (such as a pool). Be sure to fill in all gaps with concrete or another hard substance.Remove overgrown vegetation on fence lines.Try not to have large gaps between the entrance door and the floor. Snakes can fit under these gaps to enter your home.Ensure doggy doors have no gaps around them. reaching roof tops of your home. Snakes are particularly good climbers and can access your roof this way. Wear good boots (or protective footwear), long pants if about the garden and also use protective gardening gloves.Look before you touch any aspect of your garden!

PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY

Keep yourself and your family safe around snakes.

Common sense prevails around ensuring that you and your family are safe around snakes. Most importantly, if you see a snake, do NOT touch it or go near it. Be sure to teach your children and family members this very important message.

Though our snakes are shy (generally) by nature, they are the most deadly in the entire world. I repeat, Australian snakes are the most venomous snakes in the entire world.

As a result, if you see a snake, follow these simple steps:

Don't touch a snakeDon't try to kill a snake (this is also illegal and can land you in serious trouble with the law).Don't go near a snake.Do NOT try to scare a snake awayDo NOT try to capture the snake yourself.Keep children away from snakesTeach children the above points.Call The Snake Hunter to safely catch and handle the snake, then remove the snake and keep you and your family safe. We are licensed to operate as a snake catcher and snake handler.Follow the above general guidelines.Be aware and alert in and around your home.

THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE

The best advice I can give is the following:

While there is nothing you can do to 100% protect your home from snakes, common sense prevails. Implementing the above suggestions helps to reduce risks to yourself and your family. That said, there are a few key suggestions that I believe will benefit significantly:

1. Print the attached File to hang up around your home, business, school or childcare.

2. Education and awareness is the most important factor when dealing with snakes. Generally though, they rarely reach this size.

VENOM

Red bellied black snakes are a dangerously venomous species.

Distribution of Red Bellied Black Snakes in Australia.

BEHAVIOUR

This species is active by day. They are typically a very shy snake and will often freeze to avoid detection.

Holding my pet lowland copperhead snake named "Basil"

DESCRIPTION

This snake highly variable in colour ranging from light grey, reddish, brown and black. Adults which are black coloured often have a prominent orange/red streak running along the side of the body which causes many to mistake them for red bellied black snakes. The copperhead is usually 1-1.5 metres long. Females tend to be up to 1 metre long and males generally grow up to 1.5 metres long.

Black coloured copperhead snake. Notice the difference in colour from the pics above and below.

VENOM

Lowland copperhead snakes can be very dangerous and their bites can kill. The venom contains postsynaptic neurotoxins which affect the nervous system.

Up close and personal with a copperhead snake during a release

FOOD AND REPRODUCTION

Lowland copperheads feed on small vertebrates such as frogs, lizards, and occasionally small mammals. They will eat smaller snakes and are cannibalistic. If I were to put two copperheads together for mating purposes, I need to be careful the larger snake does not try to eat the smaller one.

Females can give birth to up to 30 live young in mid to late summer.

Copperhead snake removal.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

These snakes are found near damp habitats such as streams or swampy areas. The lowland copperhead is found all over southern Victoria and has a preference for places near water including around ponds, dams, canals, drainage ditches and along the sides of roads. Copperheads have adapted to living in cold temperature climates. These snakes can be active in weather considered to be too cold for other snakes.

In and around Melbourne, I mostly come across these snakes in Eltham, Kinglake and Research particularly if there is a swimming pool or pond in the person’s back yard.

Distribution of the Lowland Copperhead - Picture taken from Hoser, R.T. (1989) Australian Reptiles & Frogs. Pierson & Co, Sydney.

BEHAVIOUR

Lowland copperheads are typically docile and very shy with humans. Generally these snakes will retire and retreat if disturbed, however if threatened can assume menacing positions puffing up their body to appear bigger. When scared they often repeatedly change position with great speed ready to strike out. These are very fast snakes when they bite. However, they are not usually aggressive and bites are uncommon.

Mark captured a lowland copperhead (dark coloured - notice the red band along the side).

For more information contact Snake Hunter on 0403 875 409

www.snakehunter.com.au

EASTERN TIGER SNAKE (Notechis scutatus)

INTRODUCTIONMost of the venomous snake call outs I receive in Melbourne are where someone has spotted a tiger snake in their home or backyard.

Tiger snakes can have shorter and broader heads compared to brown snakes and are typically found at 1 – 1.5 metres long in Melbourne however I have caught tiger snakes over 2 metres long.

My pet black tiger snake named "Nacho".

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

As asnake catcher, I see tiger snakes in every suburb of Melbourne I have caught snakes.

Distribution of tiger snakes across Australia.

BEHAVIOUR

Eastern tiger snakes are in the top 5 most deadly snakes of the world.

Eastern tiger snake release into wetlands

CONCLUSION

Eastern Tiger Snakes are not to be taken lightly. They're extremely deadly, can grow very large and can climb almost anything and anywhere in search of food. They are the most common snake that I find in people's houses.

If you come across one of these snakes, call a registered snake catcher and snake handler at: Snake Hunter on 0403 875 409

www.snakehunter.com.au

Eastern Brown Snake (Pseudonaja Textilis)

INTRODUCTIONSnake Hunters is dedicated to increasing awareness about the different animals of Australia. The underside belly is often a lighter colour. Juvenile snakes can have a dark head marking and are sometimes banded. Adults can grow more than 2 metres long and be quite formidable to deal with.

VENOM

FOOD & REPRODUCTION

Eastern brown snakes love to eat small mammals such as mice, rats, as well as birds and other small reptiles are also on the menu.

In the spring time, you can see males in a combat dance fighting over dominance. The winner will mate with the female who can produce up to 30 eggs in late spring or early summer.

DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT

Distribution of Eastern Brown Snakes in Australia

Eastern Brown snakes as the name suggests, inhabit most of Eastern Australia. They can live in deserts, coastal areas, forests, open grasslands and postures but are not typically found in rainforests. They thrive in populated areas including farms, suburban towns with high human population or any areas with mice. Eastern brown snakes are mostly active during the day however young brown snakes can be found at night time.

In Victoria, this species is wide spread except for the Ottways and Gippsland. I have found this species in the Northern and north Eastern parts of Melbourne but it can also be found in Western suburbs of Melbourne also.

BEHAVIOUR

These are very fast moving snakes that have a reputation for being “aggressive” and having a “bad temper”. From my experience this is not the case unless you actually try to handle or kill one of these snakes.

When given the opportunity, the eastern brown will flee if disturbed. However if the East Brown is provoked, it will raise the front part of the body off the ground winding into an “S” shape. Its mouth will gape open and be ready to strike forward. If you see a snake in this position, back away quickly but safely and remove all persons from the area.

Do NOT in any circumstances try to handle one of these snakes. Only licensed snake catchers and snake handlers can properly deal with these snakes. In some cases, when severely provoked, the eastern brown has been known to chase away the aggressor biting repeatedly.

Side on photo of an Eastern Brown "S" bend.

CONCLUSION

I cannot highlight enough how formidable, fast and venomous the Eastern Brown snake is. The brown snake family is responsible for more deaths than any other snake in Australia for a reason. Stay away from this snake under all circumstances and call Snake Hunters to protect you, your loved ones and your pets from this beautiful yet dangerous reptile.

If you see an Eastern Brown Snake, call Snake Hunters on 0403 875 409.

www.snakehunter.com.au

PREVENT SNAKE BITES IN DOGS

INTRODUCTIONI love all animals! This happens so much that there are more snake vs dog incidents leading to my call outs than otherwise. Unfortunately, in a lot of these cases, the dog does not survive.

As such, I wanted to teach my fellow dog owners about how to protect them from snakes. Our favourite four legged companions have a curious nature and love to explore with their nose. Unfortunately, in the backyard, or while going for a walk, this means that dogs put their face right up close to a snake to learn what it is.

Otherwise, dogs are natural protectors and want to protect their masters from a dangerous snake. In these situations the fight between a dog and a snake goes as follows:

Dog smells snake.Dog bites snake.Snake bites dog.Dog gets sick.Dog goes to vet(common) Dog dies.Owner left with heart ache and expensive vet bill.

HOW TO PREVENT SNAKE BITES IN DOGS

A common question I’m often asked (unfortunately often too late) is how to protect your dog from snake bites. The following information will be of assistance.

If you see a snake, call SNAKE HUNTERS on 0403 875 409

Read and follow the instructions in my article about protecting your home from snakes at http://www.snakehunter.com.au/single-post/2016/09/29/Protect-your-Home-from-Snakes-this-Season.

Train your dog, and train him/her very well.
When going for a walk, if your dog is properly obedience trained, you will be able to recall your dog when they go too far away from youIf your dog has good recall, you can call him away from a snake. If you don’t train your dog well, the consequences can be very costly.

When going for a walk, stay on the path and away from the edges.
If your dog smells something and finds curiosity in it, pay attention to what your dog is doing. While you may still come across a snake on a footpath, you are more likely to be able to keep an eye on your dog if you can see what its doing.

Do NOT let your dog play with dead snakes.
Teach your dog not to go near snakes/lizards/reptiles.
If you have a blue tongue, or a pet snake, keep it secure and safe so the dog can’t get to it. Teach your dog not to go near it. If you don’t know how to do this, get/pay for someone to help you.

Keep your dog on a lead at all times when walking. Make this a short lead so you have full control of your dog.NOTE: It is important to note that there is not 100% fool proof way to protect your dog from a snake bite. That said, if you take the above precautions you help to reduce the risk for your best 4 legged friend.

SIGNS YOUR DOG HAS BEEN BITTEN BY A SNAKE

What are the signs you look for when your dog has been bitten by a snake?

The below is a general guideline.

Weakness followed by collapseShaking or TwitchingDilated Pupils or Difficulty BlinkingVomitingLoss of bladder or bowel control.Blood in urine.Paralysis.

NOTE:

There may be other signs and this is not an exhaustive list. If in doubt, take your dog to a vet to get checked. The signs of a snake bite are dependent upon the type of snake that bit your dog. In fact the opposite is true, snakes try to avoid people as they are incredibly shy creatures.

Now that that is said, let us talk about ways to protect your home:

It must be noted that there is nothing you can do to 100% guarantee snakes from entering your premises or back yard. Australia is home to snakes just as much as it is to our people. Frequently snakes are travelling through your yards or properties in search of food, shelter, water or protection from the elements.

Snakes can climb walls, fences, fit under and over almost anything and can make their way through the tiniest of gaps. So what can you do about them?

Simple common sense steps include (but are not exclusive to):

Keep all yards tidy and clear from loose ground cover: sheets of metal, hard rubbish etc.Remove overgrown weeds and creeping vegetation.Snakes love rock retaining walls especially where there are holes or access to water (such as a pool). Be sure to fill in all gaps with concrete or another hard substance.Remove overgrown vegetation on fence lines.Try not to have large gaps between the entrance door and the floor. Snakes can fit under these gaps to enter your home.

It must be noted that Snake Hunters do NOT recommend the use of snake "prevention" devices.

We have attended numerous call outs where snakes have been near or around these items. Don't waste your money on these items which do NOT work!

PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY

Keep you and your family safe around snakes.

Common sense prevails around ensuring that you and your family are safe around snakes. The impact that humans can have on animals is devastating for our great country. As such, we hope that by promoting an understanding of animals and the consequences of harming animals, Australian Muslims can improve their relationship with our shared environment.

ANIMALS HAVE COMMUNITIES LIKE US

First it is important to understand that like we have families and our own communities and societies, animals on Earth have their own versions of a society within their species even if we don’t understand them. Allah says in the Qur’an in Surah 6 Verse 38:

“There is not a moving (living) creature on earth, nor a bird that flies with its two wings, but are communities like you. We have neglected nothing in the Book, then unto their Lord they (all) shall be gathered”.

Though our modern day human societies predominantly reside in cities or towns in Australia, we still will come across all forms of animals. Of particular importance in Australia is that we have snakes, reptiles, insects, birds, and native mammals that could make their way into our homes, backyards and schools.

These Australian animals have their own communities and their own social rules even though humans may not yet fully understand them. Muslims need to know how to share Allah’s earth with His creation. If we do not do so properly, there can be serious consequences.

ANIMALS WILL BE THERE ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT TOO

The above verse in 6:38 speaks about a gathering of animals. This refers to animals being part of the day of judgement as well. Ibn Kathir commented on the above verse in Tafsir Ibn Kathir Vol 3 page 343 with reference to Surah 81:5 of the Qur’an: “And when the wild beasts are gathered together”. Ibn Kathir refers to Abdur Razzaq who recorded that Abu Hurairah said about Allah’s above verse:

“All the creatures will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection, the beasts, birds and all others. Allah’s justice will be so perfect, that the unhorned sheep will receive retribution from the horned sheep. Allah will then command them, “be dust!” This is when the disbeliever will say in Qur’an 78:40: “Woe to me! Would that I were dust!”

Unfortunately for people, the appearance of animals on the day of judgement makes this day much worse for us because it means we are accountable for our treatment towards animals as indicated in the below hadith:

Sunan An-Nisai 4451: It was narrated that ‘Amr bin Sharid said: “I heard Sharid say: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever kills a small bird for no reason, it will beseech Allah on the Day of Resurrection saying: O Lord, so and so killed me for no reason, and he did not kill me for any beneficial purpose.” (Hasan).

This hadith is very powerful. On this Earth, Allah has made Muslims viceroys of the planet. We can speak to each other and have power over all creatures through our intelligence and technology. If you were to deliberately crush a lizard under your foot, it could not stop you or resist. The lizard could not even cry in pain such that you could hear it. If you were in the outback and came across a snake and killed it. You could not hear the snake call out for help.

On the day of judgement however, these animals that had no voice on Earth, will be given a voice. And the power we once had over them will be diminished and the once helpless animals will complain to the All Powerfull Allah about us. We would then have to answer to him. What will be your excuse on that day for showing cruelty or harm to an animal for no just reason.

As such it is very important that we treat native animals with mercy and kindness and not to harm them without reason.

If you would like more information about the above, contact The Snake Hunter on 0403875409

THE BLESSINGS OF ANIMALS - AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE

Snake Hunters is very passionate about teaching multicultural communities about Australian animals, ecology and conservation. And he has scattered therein moving creations of all kinds. And we send down water from the sky and We cause (plants) of every goodly kind to grow therein in pairs.”

Further, Allah puts creatures on this earth as He is the Most Beneficient for us in that we obtain benefit from these animals in many ways. Two examples in the Qur'an are:

Qur’an 16:5 – CATTLE

”And the cattle, He has created them for you; in them there is warmth and numerous benefits, and of them you eat.”

Qur’an 16:68-69 – BEES

“And your Lord inspired the bees, saying: “Take your habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. Then eat of all the fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you.” There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think.”

Many who take animals and the Earth for granted would look at the above verses and feel a sense of entitlement. Honey, milk and meat are so readily available in the Western world that we forget the difficult process used to extract these foods. However for those who think deeply, we are aware that animals provide significant benefit and are a blessing for humans.

ANIMALS ARE A SIGN FROM GOD

Allah states in Surah 45:4 -

“And in your creation, and what He scattered of moving creatures are signs for people who have Faith with certainty”.

In addition, Allah says in Surah 24 Verse 45:

“Allah has created every moving (living) creature from water. Of them there are some that creep on their bellies, and some that walk on two legs, and some that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Verily Allah is Able to do all things.”

As we can clearly see from the above verses, animals are proof from God for those who have faith that He is able to do all things.

Australia is one of the places of Earth where we can truly see the above verses take effect. We have among the most diverse and unique populations of native fauna on Earth. Our animals are so beautiful, deadly and distinctive (e.g. the Koala, the Kangaroo, the Platypus) that they are symbols of Australia known around the world. When a Muslim attends one of my animal shows or events, I only hear the same words over and over again when they marvel at the extraordinarily genius of Allah's creation: "Subhanallah" (Glory be to God).

ANIMALS ARE MUSLIM & WORSHIP GOD

It is not just Muslim humans on Earth that worship God. The very definition of Muslim is the "submission to the Will of Allah" as guided by the books of Allah and prophets and messengers sent to mankind.

Animals by the same definition, are Muslim. Allah’s creatures submit to the Will of Allah as they obey Allah's commands exactly in fulfilling their purpose on this world. Birds fly by Allah’s command. Bees create honey as they are instructed, beasts of burden work for the benefit of mankind. There are many other examples of how animals are listed in the Qur’an and their benefit (See below article – List of animals in the Qur’an).

Not only are animals Muslim because they submit to Allah's Will, but animals also worship Allah just as Muslims do. This is evidenced in the Qur’an, Surah 22 Verse 18 mentions:

“See you not that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and Ad-Dawabb (moving creatures, beasts), and many of mankind, prostrate themselves to Allah. But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified. And whomsoever Allah disgraces, none can honour him. Verily, Allah does what He wills.”

Further, Surah 24 Verse 41 of the Qur’an explains:

“See you not that Allah, He it is Whom glorify whosoever is in the heavens and the earth, and the birds with wings out spread? Of each one He (Allah) knows indeed his Salat (prayer) and his glorification; and Allah is All-Aware of what they do.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir Volume 7 page 101 comments on this above ayat that Allah tells us that whosoever is in the heaves and on the earth, including animals, all glorify Him. Though humans don’t understand it, when the birds fly, they glorify Allah with which they are inspired and with which they are guided. Allah alone understands their prayer and glorification of what they do.

Finally, in Surah 17 Verse 44 of the Qur’an which states:

“The seven heavens and the earth and all that is therein glorify Him and there is not a thing but glorifies His Praise. But you understand not their glorification. Truly He is Ever Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir Volume 6, page 21 specifically points to the hadith narrated in Ahmed 3:439 who recorded that Muadh Bin Anas said that The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon some people where were sitting on their mounts and talking to one another. He said: “Ride them safely, then leave them safely. Do not use them as chairs for you to have conversations in the streets and marketplaces, because the one that is ridden may be better than the one who rides it, and may remember Allah more than he does.”

As such, Muhammad ﷺ warned people that mounted animals can be more fearing of Allah and remember Allah better than humans do. Our beloved prophet ﷺ also directly warns Muslims to have a duty of responsibility and care over Allah’s creation.

SUMMARY

It is my hope that you can see better an Islamic perspective of animals. However I noticed from my work with the Muslim community that there is a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings about snakes from Muslims in general. This is because of many reasons including:

As part of the 6 pillars of faith in Islam, Muslims believe in the unseen including angels and djinns. However many Muslims incorrectly fear that all snakes are Djinn.Snakes are mentioned in many cultures and are often misunderstood as “evil”. Muslims who migrate to Australia come from countries where there are no or limited laws on the management of snakes. In such places, the commonplace management of snakes is to kill them on sight.Muslims, like all humans, have a general fear for snakes. Some Muslims misunderstand the teachings of Muhammad ﷺ relating to how to deal with snakes.

SNAKES IN THE QUR’AN

To look at how the Muslim community should deal with snakes in Australia, let us always start with the story in the Qur’an which involves snakes. In the Qur’an, Allah refers to the story of when He spoke with Moses directly. In Surah 28 Verse 31, Allah said to Moses:

“’And throw your stick!’ But when he (Moses) saw it moving as if it were a snake,

he turned in flight, and looked not back. (It was said:) ‘

O Moses! Verily I am Allah, the Lord of the Alamin’”

It is in mankind’s nature to be afraid of snakes. Even in the presence of God Himself, a prophet as brave and strong as Moses ran from a snake and did not look back until he was recalled by Allah. After the above incident in the battle between Moses and Pharaoh, initially Moses showed Pharaoh the signs of Allah as evidence to worship one God. Surah 20 Verse 56 – 57:

“And indeed We showed him (Pharaoh) all Our signs and evidences,

but he denied and refused.

He said: “Have you come to drive us out of our land with your magic O Moses?”

An arrangement was made that Pharaoh would obtain magicians to challenge Moses. The event was as follows as mentioned in the Quran Surah 20 Verse 65 – 70:

“They said, ‘O Moses’! Either you throw first or we be the first to throw?’”

“Moses said: “Nay throw you first!” Then behold! Their ropes and their sticks, by their magic appeared to him though they moved fast.”

“So Moses conceived fear in himself”

“We said “Fear not! Surely you will have the upper hand.””

“And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made.

That which they have made is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will never be successful,

to whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.”

“So the magicians fell down prostrate. They said: “We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses”.

We see that Moses and the people feared the snakes used by the magicians. When Moses threw his stick, it swallowed up the magic. Many Muslims incorrectly related to the above verses and associate snakes with evil and magic. A person may want to kill a snake to protect themselves from djinn or magic or because they perceive a snake as dangerous. The fact remains however that it is not magic or a djinn, it is just a snake and should not be harmed because as a Muslim, it is against your religion to do so.

DO NOT KILL SNAKES WHEN YOU SEE THEM – IT IS AGAINST ISLAM

There is often a misunderstanding of the following hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

Sunan Abu Dawood Volume V Hadith 5258: The same is narrated on the authority of Ibn Ajlan in which he said: “Let him inform it (to leave thrice – reference to telling a snake to leave), and if it seems to him after that, let him kill it for it is a devil.

Sunan Abu Dawood Volume V Hadith 5259 – It is narrated on the authority of Abu As Sa’ib that he visited Abu Sa’id Al Khudri… and the rest is the same (as the above hadith) even though more complete in which he said: “Give it a three day warning (to leave), and if it seems to you after that, kill it for it is a devil.”

Sunan Abu Dawood Volume V Hadith: 5260 – It is narrated on the authority of Abd ArRahman Ibn Abu Laila from his father that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the female snakes of houses, thereupon he said: “If you see anything of those, say: “I beseech you by the covenant taken upon you by (the Prophet) Solomon not to harm us.” If they return afterwards, then kill them.

While there are other similar hadiths on the matter, effectively it is important to read the above hadiths carefully and recognise there are specific instructions NOT to immediately kill a snake. I repeat: The CORRECT way to deal with a snake in accordance with the Sunnah of Muhammad ﷺ is DO NOT to kill a snake when you see it.

Instead, the Prophet ﷺ would warn a snake to leave the house first in accordance with the above hadiths. In Australia, you can call the Snake Hunter on 0403 875 409 to safely capture and remove the snake.
As such, there is no need to kill the snake in any circumstances.

Further it is important to note the above hadiths pertain to when you have a snake in your house ONLY. When you come across a snake in the wild, and there is no reason to kill it, you should leave it alone.

Do NOT kill snakes when you see them – It is against Islam

KILLING SNAKES ALSO HARMS AUSTRALIA

I have provided a list of numerous hadiths on the importance of Muslims to be kind to animals, to be cautious of the punishment of Allah on the day of judgement for their treatment of animals, and to seek the mercy of Allah by showing mercy to animals (see article: “Kindness to Animals”).

Allah SWT mentions animals numerous times in the Qur'an and mentions their benefits. Snakes are the creation of Allah the same as a bird, bees and mammals. They have a VERY important role to play in Australia’s unique and delicate ecosystem. Snakes help manage populations of vermin such as mice and rats and play an important role in food webs.

As Muslims, we need to take very important care of our beautiful country of Australia, its people and native wildlife. This ensures a healthy biodiversity in Australia for everyone to enjoy.

Killing snakes can harm Australia’s ecosystem.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU SEE A SNAKE?

So if you don’t kill a snake, what should you do? Aren’t they all poisonous?

The answer is Australia has the most venomous snakes in the entire world. These include the inland taipan, eastern brown snake, coastal taipan, tiger snake, death adder, copperhead, red bellied black snake, collet’s snake and much more.

Just because you don’t kill a snake, doesn’t mean you leave it either. By law, you must not touch, harm or kill a snake. There are very serious penalties as snakes are protected species in Australia. Touching, harming or killing a snake is a punishable offense in accordance with Australian law. As Muslims, it is imperative to demonstrate the goodness of the Islamic faith by abiding by Australian laws.

It is illegal to touch, harm or kill a snake

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A SNAKE

In the wild:

If you come across a snake in the wild – leave it alone. It is as simple as that. Just back away and walk around it from a good safe distance.

In your home, school or business:

If you come across a snake in your home, school or business, follow the following ste

ps:

Do NOT go near it.Keep all other persons away from the snake (especially children).Warn others that there is a snake in the area.Watch where the snake is/goes from a safe distance.Do NOT throw anything at it or try to kill it (you are more likely to be bitten).
CallThe Snake Hunter 0403 875 409 (if in Victoria) to attend your property to safely capture and relocate the snake.
Wait for me to arrive and follow my instructions.

Call The Snake Hunter on 0403875409

SUMMARY

I hope you have learned about the importance of NOT killing a snake when you see it. Killing or harming a snake is against Islam, hurts Australia, is against the law and has severe repercussions for you as a Muslim in the Hereafter. Instead call the Snake Hunter on 0403 875 409 to safely remove the snake to be returned to the wild.

ANIMALS IN THE QUR'AN

Snake Hunters is dedicated to the teachings about animals. Our hope is that the Muslim community of Australia will have a better integration into Australia through understanding of how to treat Australian native animals. The hadiths are sorted into the books they derive from and are copied without editing here on this article for you to read.

SUNAN AN-NISAI:

An- Nisai 4448: It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not take anything that has a soul as a target.” (Sahih).Sunan An-Nisai 4451: It was narrated that ‘Amr bin Sharid said: “I heard Sharid say: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever kills a small bird for no reason, it will beseech Allah on the Day of Resurrection saying: O Lord, so and so killed me for no reason, and he did not kill me for any beneficial purpose.” (Hasan).

Hadith 4451 of Sunan An-Nisai is extremely important for it shows that a small bird killed for no reason will complain to Allah about your actions. As Muslims, you must understand that you have complete power and control over animals in this world. However in the Hereafter, the small animals will have power and control to testify against your mistreatment of it on the day of judgement.

SAHIH AL BUKHARI:

Sahih Al Bukhari Vol 7 Hadith 421: Narrated Anas: “The Prophet ﷺ has forbidden the shooting of tied or confined animals”.

This hadith shows that Muslims do not show any unnecessary cruelty to animals in any way.

Sahih Al Bukhari Vol 7 Hadith 423: “Narrated Sa’id Bin Jubair: While I was with Ibn Umar, we passed by a group of young men who had tied a hen and started shooting at it. When they saw Ibn Umar, they dispersed leaving it. On that Ibn Umar said: “Who has done this? The Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who did so.”

I ask anyone who reads the above hadith: Would you like to invoke the curse of Muhammad ﷺ because of your actions to animals?

Sahih Al Bukhari Vol 4 Hadith 689: “Narrated Abdullah Bin Umar, Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “A lady was punished because of a cat which she had imprisoned till it died. She entered the (Hell) Fire because of it; for she neither gave it food nor water as she had imprisoned it nor set it free to eat from the vermin of the earth”.

This hadith is of serious importance to Muslims. It clearly shows that as Muslims, we have responsibility over animals that are within our care. If we show animals cruelty, are negligent of them or hurt them, we will be punished for this. If our conduct results in an animal’s cruel death, we may face the hellfire.

Sahih Al Bukhari Vol 8 Chapter 27 Hadith 6009: Narrated Abu Hurairah: Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “While a man was walking on a road, he became very thirsty. Then he came across a well, got down into it, drank and then came out. Meanwhile he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. The man said to himself, ‘This dog is suffering from the same state of thirst as I did.’ So he went down the well and filled his show with water and held it in his mouth and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for that and forgave him.” The people asked, “Oh Allah’s messenger! IS there a reward for us in serving the animals?” He said: “(Yes) There is a reward for serving any animate (living being)”.

This hadith shows that kindness and mercy to Allah’s creation can warrant Allah being merciful to us. How otherwise can you expect the mercy of Allah if you are unkind to those that seek your mercy?

SUNAN IBN MAJAH:

Sunan Ibn Majah Book 27: Hadith 3170: It is narrated on the authority of Shaddan Ibn Aws that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “No doubt, Allah Almighty has decreed kindness in everything: so when you kill, you should be kind in killing; and when you slaughter, you should be kind in slaughtering, and let anyone of you make sharp his blade, and comfort your slaughtered animal (by slaying it swiftly in avoidance of pain and torment”.

The above hadith shows that Allah has decreed kindness in everything even the death of an animal. As such, if you need to be kind in slaughtering an animal, you must also be extremely kind when the animal is alive.

Sunan Ibn Majah Book 27: Hadith 3171: It is narrated on the authority of Abu Sa’id Al Khudri that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon a man who was dragging a sheep from its ear, thereupon he said to him; “leave its ear, and catch it by the side of its neck!”

This hadith shows Muhammad ﷺ specifically telling a man to handle an animal in a way that does not hurt it. When attending one of my animal displays or shows, be sure to handle the reptile or snake the way I show you how to do so.

Sunan Ibn Majah Book 27 Hadith 3172: It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the blades should be made sharp and hidden from the animals (that will be slaughtered), and he said in this context: “When anyone of you slaughters, let him kill it swiftly (as much as he can”.Sunan Ibn Majah Book 27 Hadith 3185: It is narrated on the authority of Abu Said Al Khudri that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade to mutilate animals.”

SUNAN ABU DAWOOD:

Sunan Abu Dawood Volume V Hadith 5266: It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: An ant bit one of the prophets, thereupon he ordered that the sect of ants should be burnt. Allah almighty revealed to him: “Is it because an ant has bitten you, you ruined one of the sects which (Allah has created and they) glorify (Allah Almighty)?”

This hadith shows that a prophet of Allah was reprimanded because of killing/harming animals even as small as an ant unnecessarily. It also demonstrates that ants too glorify Allah.

Sunan Abu Dawood Volume V Hadith 5268: It is narrated on the authority of Abdu Ar-Rahman Ibn Abdullah From his father that he said: We were on journey with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when we saw a small bird having two babies, which we picked up, thereupon the mother bird came and started spreading its wings. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and asked: “Who has aggrieved this by taking its babes? Restore its babes to it.” On the other hand, he saw a sect of ants which we burnt, thereupon he said: “Who has burnt this?” We said: “We have done” ON that he said: “It is not befitting for anyone to punish with the fire except the Lord of the fire.”

This hadith shows that we do not even mentally harm an animal in any way.

Sunan Abu Dawood Volume V Hadith 5270: It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Mughaffal that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the throwing with pebbles and said: “It never catches a game, nor does it injure the enemy: but it gouges out the eyes and breaks the teeth.Sunan Abu Dawood Volume V Hadith 5269: It is narrated on the authority of Abd Ar-Rahman Ibn Uthman that a physician asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to use (the blood of) a frog in his medicine, thereupon the messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade him to kill it.

SAHIH MUSLIM

Sahih Muslim Hadith 2245: Abu Huraira reported The Prophet ﷺ said: “A prostitute saw a dog lolling around a well on a hot day and hanging his tongue from thirst. She drew some water for it in her show, so Allah forgave her.”

The above hadith is one of my favourites. It demonstrates that a woman who’s profession earned sins was forgiven for those sins because of mercy she demonstrated to animals.

CONCLUSION

I hope you can see from the above hadiths, that there is a significant importance in Islam that focuses on the welfare and kind treatment towards animals.
