The Snake Hunter in Indonesia 2026
Return To Indonesia
In August 2026, Mark returned to Indoneisa after being invited by three different rotary clubs. He travelled to Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Subang to visit different orphanages and community groups about snake safety. While there, Mark, with Rotary, also provided material aid to orphanages. This was Mark’s second trip to Indonesia in 2026, but he had previously travelled to Indonesia before as a child. There, Mark participated in many activities and Mrs Snake Hunter and his daughter Aishah were with him too.
Rotary Jakarta
Mark gave a speech at Rotary in Jakarta talking about vulnerable populations at risk of snake bites in poorer regions of developing nations. Mark asked how Rotary could help and contribute to achieving better outcomes for the people of Indonesia to reduce snake bite numbers through Rotary networks and access to different community groups. The speech was very well received and we also brought along Sioux Indonesia (Indonesia Snake Foundation) to talk about snake safety.
MUSLIM ORPHANAGE JAKARTA
​After Rotary Jakarta, Mark and his family went to the Muslim Orphanage Jakarta where together with the Indonesia Snake Foundation, we gave a speech to the Orphans and staff about snakes of Indonesia, what to do if you encounter a snake and proper guidelines for first aid if bitten. The staff advised that the orphans had never had such education before and really enjoyed it. Mark returned to the orphanage with material aid and brought with him Bezie Galih Manggala who assisted as well.
Asrama Yatim Rumah Harapan Subang
Mark and his family travelled to Subang Indonesia and visited the Asrama Yatim Rumah Harapan Subang orphanage where together with his friend Phriie, gave the orphans a wonderful show about snake safety including the use of giant reticulated pythons. The orphans got a chance to hold the snakes. The staff advised that the children had never experienced such a show before and were really appreciative of the learning for them.
Shopping With the Orhphans
After the snake safety show, Mark took the children to the local shops to buy what ever they want. Of all the things in the shops, they all chose a school bag and new shoes. It really puts into perspective what is important in life. These young children in a rural part of Indonesia have very little, but are always smiling. GIANT RETICULATED PYTHON
Reticulated pythons are the longest snakes I the world. Mark visited Phriie’s personal home where he got up close to the huge reticulated pythons. These snakes are bigger in real life than the video/photos show. They are capable of eating humans but humans are not their primary diet. Despite how big these pythons are, it is actually the pythons are at risk of humans due to habitat loss, being hunted or smuggled.
Reptile Club of Bandung
Mark went to Bandung where, together with Rotary, he met with the Reptile Club of Bandung where we discussed working together to help educate the people of Indonesia about snake safety and proper snake bite treatment. The Reptile Club advised they do a lot of work within Bandung, but those most vulnerable within the rural areas remain uneducated about snakes. We discussed future plans of working together with Rotary to make this achievable.
BANDUNG ORPHANAGE
Mark, his daughter Aishah and Mrs Snake Hunter went with the Reptile Club of Bandung and Rotary Bandung to the AL-FITRA YATIM -DHUAFA orphanage in Bandung. There we, gave gifts to the orphans including food, sweets and stationary for their studies. The children loved the gifts and then, the reptile club of Bandung and I gave a show about snake safety and the snakes of Indonesia. Children got to hold the (non venomous) snakes and other animals. Staff advised this was their first time doing such an activity and were very grateful.
Rotary Bandung
Mark visited Rotary in Bandung and gave a speech about snake safety and awareness in Indonesia. He pointed out the risks faced by Indonesia rural populations including: proximity to venomous snakes, inaccessibility to antivenom, poor health seeking behaviours and misunderstandings of approaches to snakes. We discussed how to work collaboratively to achieve improved outcomes around snake safety and awareness.
ROTARY YOGYAKARTA SPEECH
After Aishah returned home, Mark and Mrs Snake Hunter went to Yogyakarta where they met with Rotary Yogyakarta and Mark gave a speech to the Ministry of Environment, Scouts, Fire Brigade, Veterinary association and other community group representatives to speak about snakes of Indonesia, snake safety and proper first aid. We discussed how to work together as a collective to improving outcomes for poorer communities of rural regions of Indonesia. It was a very engaging and interactive where people got to hold the animals and see them up close.
School Speech - Yogyakarta
We also gave a speech about snake safety at a local school in Indonesia school. I worked with The Indonesia Snake Foundation again to speak about snakes of Indonesia, snake safety and first aid in the case of a snake bite. Rotary Yogyakarta came along too. The speech was very well received by students and it was very interactive and well received.
Dr Tri
We took the time to meet Indonesia's leading toxicologist named Dr Tri. We spoke about access to antivenom and developments in Indonesia towards snake bite treatments including education, first aid and training hospital staff.
