Near Fatal Snake Bite 2024

On 10 May 2024, for the first time in my life, I was bitten by a tiger snake. What started as a routine call out to a home in Diamond Creek resulted in my pinning stick breaking and me being envenomed into the veins on my right index finger.

As a snake catcher, I recognised the immediate danger I was in. As a registered nurse, I realised I had to make the correct decisions now. The place was in a difficult to find location on maps and the environment was not conducive to first aid. Realising that as the venom was in my blood, I had only 10 - 15 mins before I might lose conciousness.
The Next Steps Saved My Life
I made the decision. My home was 2 mins away. I captured the snake, called 000, bandaged my arm properly and then drove home calmly. Sometimes in Victoria, you get a Code Oranage. I couldnt risk it. Where I was bitten, no one could save me. At home, I knew I had 3 people trained in first aid who could keep me breathing. This was the right call that saved my life. While typical 1st aid guidelines state to stay still, had I done so with the venom in my blood, I would likely not be alive to tell this story.
Treatment in Hospital & Coming Home
I spent 7 days in hospital and had 2 doses of antivenom and 30+ bags of blood and plasma. In hospital, I was bleeding to death, my organs shut down, I went partially blind, I got total amnesia, and lost feeling and control of my right arm.

When I came home, I had significant medical complications for some time. It took me months to recover and even then I was struggling daily to recover. The photo here is of me unconcious in my front garden when the paramedics arrived taken from CCTV. In this moment, I had no idea I was being treated. Recovery & Starting Again
Recovery was long and painful. Forgetting my children and my life was one of the hardest things. My daughter taught me my life again from the beginning by showing me our photo album. I saw my life again from the beginning and my memories gradually came back to me. Learn more about this HERE.

I resumed snake catching as soon as I was able. I went back to work, running my business, studying and looking after my children as a single dad. This was the single most physically painful thing I had ever been through, but by no means do I blame the snake. This is just the reality and life of being a snake catcher.
One thing that I achieved soon after the bite, I worked with my daughter Aeve to finish our Certificate III in carpentry together. This photo is of us building a truss roof.

Soon after my bite, I was back in action teaching people how to be safe around snakes as this is my passion for life (see photo). I want to really thank every human being in Melbourne and abroad for all their care and support of my children while I could not. People brought vegetables to my home, Leigh fixed my computer, people gave food and shopping. I was not worried about me, I was only worried about my girls and the town of Diamond Creek helped so much. The people of Melbourne gave money to help us rebuild our lives while I recovered.
